Interface redesign

February 25th, 2008

Just realised that I never made a post about our redesign… It went live a while ago, and if you like or loathe it, please let us know so we can keep improving it. Based on feedback and traffic stats, we could see that the interaction buttons weren’t entirely useful or understandable previously, so we have cleaned everything up a bit. Hopefully it is easier to use now!

We also added in loads of new contributors, and more content types such as the funky photogalleries. idiomag is now running about 6000 articles a month!  And growing…

I suggest you make it clearer what ‘love’ and ‘bin’ buttons do. Right now there’s an ambiguity - obviously, love/bin will keep or trash the article; however, it’s a coarse control in that I can love or bin an article for several different reasons, and I’m not sure which of them you guys presume the reader uses. Specifically, I can trash an article because:
    a) I’m not interested in the particular artist
    b) I’m not, or no longer am interested in the genre
    c) The article was crap
    d) The article was miscategorized

If you always assume that I trash the article for any single one of those reasons, and adjust filtering for articles for me accordingly, you WILL over-adjust or under-adjust the filtering when the real reason is different, forcing me to choose between either missing out on good content, or living with crap content that I have to page by manually, but fear deleting.

So, you really should exhibit more fine-grained control - when i trash something, there should be a way to choose between saying - “I just don’t want this review”,”I don’t want reviews for this artist”, “I don’t want reviews by this author”, “I don’t want reviews of this type (event reviews or location-based reviews that are irrelevant to me)”, “I don’t want reviews from this source”, etc.

This is kinda off topic, but anyway… When I open your site, the switch between pages is slow and I think the site in general slows down my computer. I don’t know if this is a general consensus among us users, but it is a problem for me.

Augie - we get very few complaints re speed, as its all designed to be lightweight. If it keeps being slow, do drop us an email and we will have a look.
